Everyone has heard that the desiccant property of rice can save your cell phone from water damage. While it may be, but probably isn't, true that the rice absorbs the moisture, it doesn't remove the minerals that are left behind. Those minerals are what leads to corrosion and major damage. Believe it or not, pure distilled water is non-conductive, it's the impurities and minerals in the water that are conductive. Too many people power their phone on after soaking their phone in rice for a few hours and send electrons throughout the board that is now corroded, covered in oxidation, and full of new connections shorting together circuits that Apple never intended. This fries components and cures the mineral deposits, fouling the solder joints and compromising the connections. If you are unlucky enough to drop your phone in the toilet or wash it along with your cool acid-wash jeans, don't put it in rice. Immediately turn it off, open the phone and remove the battery. Using 99% isopropyl alcohol, clean the entire surface of the circuit board. The alcohol will displace any water and evaporate much easier than the water. Dry with low heat from a heat gun or blowdryer. Only when you're certain that there is no more moisture and no corrosion, replace the battery and try turning it on. DISCLAIMER: This fix is better than using rice, but there is no guarantee your phone will come out unscathed. Attempt at your own risk. Some phones' warranties may be voided by opening the phone. Only attempt if your are willing to risk permanent damage to your phone.
